Governor visits daughter in jail

By Pedro Ruz Gutierrez
Florida Correspondent
Posted October 23 2002

Gov. Jeb Bush and wife Columba, in Orlando for Tuesday's gubernatorial debate, visited their daughter, Noelle, at the Orange County Jail.

The Bushes spent about 15 minutes with Noelle Bush, 25, who was ordered to spend 10 days in jail last week by an Orange County Circuit judge for violating terms of her drug-treatment program by possessing crack cocaine. She has been undergoing treatment at the Center for Drug-Free Living.

Jail spokesman Allen Moore said the Bushes visited their daughter sometime "before 2 p.m."

It was the first visit by her immediate family.

Jail officials say Noelle Bush has not received any special treatment and that her parents' visit was no different than for other inmates who receive visitors.

However, this was the second time she has had a visitor outside regular visiting hours.

C. David Brown II, a family friend and GOP campaign contributor, visited Noelle Bush on Saturday. Brown, 50, is a Windermere resident and counsel for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

Regular visitation hours for female inmates in the main facility, where Noelle Bush is housed, are from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. Sundays.

Moore said jail supervisors make exceptions by allowing visits outside those hours for any newly incarcerated inmates, as in Saturday's visit. Visitors who travel from more than 50 miles away, such as the governor, are also given leeway, Moore said.

Noelle Bush is being held in protective custody, separate from the general population. Officials said that is the policy for high-profile inmates.

The 8-by-9-foot cell includes a metal bed, mattress, sink, commode and battery-operated TV.
