BUSH TWINS GIVE GUARDS THE BRUSH-OFF
Jan 8, 2004
JENNA and Barbara Bush quarreled
with Secret Service agents assigned to protect them
mostly because the agents made it hard for them to go
into bars and drink with friends when they were
underage, the Washington Post reports. After they
complained to their mother, "Laura [Bush] didn't want
her girls to feel constrained, and the agents were
ordered to pull back from traditional methods of
coverage." A few months later, when the Secret Service
scrambled to grab all presidential relatives on Sept.
11, 2001, the agents couldn't find Jenna for hours."
The D.C. paper also reports that Chelsea Clinton "went
to parties and drank and had boyfriends just like many
other teenagers. But Chelsea had a knack for keeping
her mishaps out of the public eye . . . she treated
her Secret Service agents with respect. Accordingly,
they were more inclined to protect her when she got
into jams. The [Bush] twins, meanwhile, seemed to have
decided that their agents were their enemies - and
their chauffeurs, bellhops and valets."
